Ontario Extends Lifting of Restricted Fire Zone and Travel Ban Across Northwestern Region

THUNDER BAY, Ontario / RankWire.AI / — Active wildfire restrictions across Ontario in the northwest came to an end early Thursday as heavy rainfall greatly diminished the risk of fires. The Ministry of Natural Resources announced that the regional restricted fire zone and backcountry travel ban were officially lifted at 12:01 a.m. This action concludes weeks of strict outdoor burning bans in the Northwest Region, which were put in place to prevent wildland fires.

Ontario confirms restricted fire zone and travel ban to be lifted
Highway maintenance crews clear public roadways to restore regional transit and emergency access.

Fire officials confirmed that valid burning permits are now valid again, allowing outdoor fires, recreational burning, and fireworks under normal safety standards. In Thunder Bay, municipal authorities announced that local fire bans would also end at 5:00 p.m. Thursday, with a reminder that municipal permits are still required for open fires. The decision to lift restrictions was driven by cooler weather and widespread rain, which helped reduce the amount of available fuel for fires.

Restrictions on Fire Zones and Travel in Northwestern Ontario Are Being Removed

Along with the end of burning restrictions, emergency management officials lifted local access restrictions in the Armstrong and Whitesand First Nation areas. Transportation agencies also confirmed that major roads such as Highway 527 and Highway 811 are now fully open to the public. This reopening allows residents displaced by the fires to return home and restores routine transportation and recreation across key routes.

Ontario Forest Fires’ tracking systems reported that the orders around large fire complexes, including Thunder Bay 36 and Dryden 34, were officially revoked at 9:00 a.m. Thursday. Evacuation alerts in the Fort Frances 39 district near the United States border were also lifted after safety assessments showed active containment efforts had neutralized perimeter threats.

Regional Fire Restrictions Were Officially Removed Thursday Morning

While regional bans are gone, fire crews continue to monitor remaining remote fires. Emergency services caution that, despite lower risks, the public must remain careful when igniting fires on dry land. Monitoring agencies will keep tracking humidity and lightning activity to update fire danger levels for the rest of the summer fire season.

Local leaders in affected northern communities welcomed the rescinding of emergency measures, emphasizing that the reopening of access helps support tourism and outdoor activities. The provincial government thanked residents and visitors for following safety rules during the height of fire danger. As the measures are fully lifted, authorities continue to urge everyone enjoying the outdoors to stay compliant with fire regulations to prevent future incidents.
